The benefits of offering French IV

At Del Campo High School students are required to complete a two year world language course with the option to choose either French or Spanish. Unfortunately, due to decreasing interest in French IV, the school administration has decided to remove this class and limit classes solely to French I-III through French III. This decision has left French language learners disappointed and deprived of the opportunity to further develop their language skills. It is crucial for Del Campo High School to reconsider their decision and provide every student with a chance to pursue their interests and continue their linguistic journey.

One important reason for offering French IV is that the course provides better cultural understanding. Del Campo’s French teacher, Madame Oprescu, believes that our school administration should reconsider having French IV back. She argues that the class goes beyond language proficiency and states that it allows students to immerse themselves in cultural experiences as it  gives them the opportunity to have profound appreciation of the arts, traditions, and history of French speaking societies. This will contribute to a better understanding of different cultures at our school.

In addition, offering this course will fulfill Del Campo’s commitment to their students’ needs and interests. Our school should offer support for different kinds of interests. By limiting French classes to French III, Del Campo is stifling the enthusiasm for French learning students and depriving them from having the opportunity to develop their French language skills.

“I think it is unfair that the school offers Spanish IV while French IV was removed,” said French III student Stepheny Hood.

Finally, allowing students the opportunity to take this class will help them develop a more advanced level in grammar, reading, writing, and communication skills. Colleges and universities often look for students who have shown commitment to foreign language learning. Offering French IV can enhance students’ college application and offer different career options such as translation, international relations, and tourism. This would also help our students save money on college courses and gain language credits for college.

Having French IV back can demonstrate Del Campo’s commitment to foreign language education. Madame Oprescu’s dedication and willingness to teach French IV, along with enthusiastic passionate students who are interested in taking the course, highlights the importance of foreign language in our community.
