Sports may not get that much attention when they aren’t actually competing, but as athletes train up for next year in PEX, the class also supports the academic requirement needed to keep playing in a sport.

Several sports take advantage of the opportunity to get a head start on their season.

For a program intent on getting back to playoffs, football players undoubtedly need the off-season training provided by the PEX classroom. During fourth period, returning players looking ahead to next year can focus on technique or strength training, and the class is open to all athletes, including freshman focused on upping their game for the next few years.

The other advantage of the PEX class is that, as an elective, students receive credit for being in the class and training. For athletes in need of a 2.0 minimum GPA to participate, getting a good grade in PEX adds to their GPA to maintain their duty as campus role models.

Erin Goldfried, teacher and football coach on campus, commented on the value of the PEX class to his players, and all others, “It’s no different than any other elective class,” he said, “[Students] build leadership, team bonding, and stronger self-esteem inside the classroom.”

While the San Juan Unified School District grade requirements for athletes might seem low to some, the 2.0 GPA requirement exists also at Sacramento State and UC schools, which is defined as all Cs on a transcript in high school and college.

Junior Chase Harley commented that “As a lineman it’s important to have good technique when blocking, and PEX really helps me focus on developing good form outside of season.”

Whether the standard of academic maintenance in education nationwide needs to be raised or not, the players find the skills in the class to be the most important benefit.
