20 Del Campo athletes make it into Sacramento State Classic

On Saturday March 2, Jesuit High School hosted the The Sacramento State High School Classic Track Meet where athletes from 55 different schools competed in a variety of events such as relays, sprints, distance, and field events. This year, 20 of Del Campo athletes made it in this qualifier meet leaving coaches proud to attend the meet. The day was filled with excitement and nervous jitters as the stands began to fill up with cheers and laughter.

Jennah Powell (10) and Calia Grier (11) are two of the athletes that made it to this meet. They spent their time preparing by working extra hard at practice and taking coaches advice on anything they needed to improve. When asked about how they felt to be in the meet, Powell stated, “When I found out I was jaw dropped, in shock and couldn’t believe the news.”

To get into this meet, athletes needed to show a great improvement in performance.“ I found it pretty important because it’s such a big meet and I didn’t get in last year so getting in this year feels like a big improvement.” said Grier.

Due to this being a high level competition, Coach Baeder gave these 20 athletes a little extra attention by making sure they stayed in shape and drilling more days than the other athletes on the team.

Not only did the athletes work hard during practice but had a great time during the meet.

“I feel like I did pretty good, I got a PR (personal record) in my 200”, said Powell after she ran a 27.02.

In the relay, Del Campo could use some work, “We did good but our handoffs could’ve been better.” said Grier after the girls ran 52.03 about .41 seconds from their PR.

The 20 Cougar athletes showcased their skills and determination throughout the meet. It was an exciting moment for the school and athletes as they displayed a great performance and sportsmanship.

When asking Baeder how she felt her team did she said, “I feel they did really well, It’s exciting that you’re competing against the same teams that end up in championships, sections, masters, and even state.”
